June 3 Topic: Intersectionality

In honor of the start of Pride month, let's discuss intersectionality! It is a challenge facing many of us to get women's issues recognized within a secular movement historically dominated by white, cis, straight men. Intersectionality, coined by Black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, is a key framework which can be used to break down the idea that feminist, LGBTQ, or racial issues "aren't secular issues". While we can use this to further women's issues, we should also apply the lens of intersectionality with other justice movements to these efforts and ensure that we don't make the same mistakes.

Some discussion topics:

- What makes something a "secular issue"?

- What makes something a "women's issue"?

- What is your understanding of intersectionality?

(I encourage you to do a bit of research before the meeting!)

- How can we apply intersectionality to issues we care about?

- How can we encourage others to take an intersectional approach to social justice?

PFC's Discussion Groups are moderated forums with pre-selected topics. Anyone who wishes to participate in these discussions is welcome to do so.

This group is meant to be a space for women within PFC to meet and discuss whatever topics are of most interest. Meeting topics will be posted in advance, but please feel free to bring along topic or activity suggestions for future!
