Join us for lunch at El Burro at 11:45 am

1113 S Braddock Ave, PGH

Host: Anna L.
Informal Topic:  Cultural Appropriation

This event is mainly about lunch and community, but will at some point move towards the topic of cultural appropriation.

Food is available for purchase from El Burro. It is not provided for free.  After purchasing food, please meet in the covered, outdoor seating area in the back of the restaurant.

Wikipedia defines cultural appropriation as "the inappropriate or unacknowledged adoption of an element or elements of one culture or identity by members of another culture or identity."  When cultural elements are copied from a minority culture by members of a dominant culture, and these elements are used outside of their original cultural context – sometimes even against the expressly stated wishes of members of the originating culture – the practice is often received negatively.

As possible examples, see the below comedy videos. Do you find them funny, offensive, educational, lame, racist, or otherwise?

What about the Crying Indian ad from the 1970s featuring an Italian-American dressed in a Native American costume.

Do you have examples of cultural appropriation?  Or are people just overly sensitive and over-reacting?

(El Burro is a short walk from Sunday Assembly Pittsburgh, which meets on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the Wilkins School Community Center, 7604 Charleston Avenue, PGH.  Sunday Assembly is a partner of the Pittsburgh Freethought Community.)
