Hamas’s October 7th intrusion into Israel and its killing of 1,200 people was a horrendous act that was rightfully condemned by the US and the vast majority of the world.  The disproportionate response of the Israeli government of Netanyahu has resulted in the killing of over 18,000 Palestinians, vast destruction, and a humanitarian crisis. This is but the latest round of violence in a > 75-year history where both sides can legitimately point to horrors done by the other.

  • Have Israel’s religion-based apartheid policies since its founding been responsible for the legitimate resentment of the Palestinians and the resultant support for Hamas and other similar groups?
  • What role has terrorism played in this conflict and how well has it served the causes of the Israeli and Palestinian people?
  • What roles do Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religious extremism play in this problem?
  • What are humanist perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian issue and what potential solutions could be offered?
